FAQs

Got Questions?

We have answers...
  • What is in your soil-less mixes?

Our mixes are made from down stream waste products, like rice hulls, compost, and coconut fiber. Our nutrient charges are totally organic too.

  • What do you grow?

We grow over 20 varieties of produce, from greens in the spring to pumpkins in the fall. We grow several varieties of tomatoes, squash, and peppers, as well as several other vegetables.

  • Is your produce chemical free?

We are a certified organic farm operation. All our products are non GMO and pesticide free.

  • What are the downsides to using Peat, Perlite, or Vermiculite in soils?

Peat offers high absorbency when treated with a wetting agent, acidic pH, and compaction prevention properties for soil. Organically approved wetting agents typically have a shelf life of less than one year. However, peat doesn’t contain nutrients plants need to grow. Peat is not considered renewable and regrows at less than 1mm per year.

Perlite  aids with soil aeration. It has an alkaline pH. However, it is a strip-mined product that requires energy, and can have a detrimental effect on the local ecological environment. In addition it is then heated to 1650 degrees F to be useful. It is also non-renewable.

Vermiculite  aids with water retention but is poor for aeration. It can also raise the pH some. Vermiculite is best for plants that require soil that stays moist. Additionally, vermiculite must be exfoliated to be used in soil mixes and can contain trace amounts of asbestos, a known carcinogen, if it is too dusty.

  • What do the rice hulls do?

The rice hulls aid in aeration and drainage, and add silica as they decompose. They are a waste product from parboiled rice, are renewable and sustainable, and are less expensive than perlite. They are also high in silicon.

  • What is coconut coir (fiber) and what does it do?

Coconut coir is made from the fibers found between a ripe coconut’s shell and outer surface. Coir improves water retention, possesses aeration properties, and has a neutral pH. In addition, it is renewable and sustainable. We use an OMRI-approved coir washed for growing.

  • What is the benefit of TurboC mix?

Greater germination rates, longer watering intervals, significantly larger root growth and stiffer cell walls in plants. This sustainable mix performs!

  • What makes TurboC different from other mixes?

TurboC is not only all organic and approved for certified organic growers by multiple organic certifiers it is the most sustainable mix on the market. We use no mined materials in the base mix like peat, perlite or vermiculite. These ingredients take a lot of energy to manufacture. All of our ingredients come from the Ag waste stream and are recycled into a high performance mix. This mix contains a nutrient charge for the first 6-8 weeks of growing.

  • So what is in TurboC?

While the formula is proprietary it contains Coir, Compost, Forest products, Rice Hulls, and organic nutrients.

  • So what makes TurboC different to water?

Typically, even in a hot greenhouse these mixes only need to be watered every other day. Typically water completely with a soaking water, then skip for a day. This saves a great deal of time and labor.

  • Is this mix nut free?

YES! This mix is nut free and with its long watering intervals makes it a great mix for classrooms. It is also shell fish waste free.

  • What is Multi-Mix2plus used for?

MultiMis2plus can be used as the sole ingredient in raised beds, as mix in lasagna gardens or incorporated in the top layer of soil in a normal gardening applications. MM2+ has all the ingredients to grow direct in, including nutrients and good drainage characteristics. It does not compact like compost alone. MM2+ can also be used in planting perennials as a moisture holder to help buffer transplant shock. Place some directly in the bottom of hole, then mix in with existing soil 50% while filling hole around plant.

  • What is Premium Mix for?

Premium Mix is used for seed starting or growing micro greens. It is used in applications where compost is not desired.

  • Do you offer volume discounts on your soil?

Yes, we offer discounts on different levels of discounts.  They increase as you pass certain volume levels.  Our standard pallet for a 2 cu ft bag is 27 bags (2 cubic yards).  We also offer our soil in 1 yard super sacks. For the super sacks you must have the equipment to handle them once you leave the farm.
